Mibo - Mediated Interview Robot
Mibo is a children's social robot specifically designed for forensic interviewing. Children who may be suffering from severe forms of child abuse are interviewed by police and social workers. A child may be fearful or distrusting when speaking with law enforcement as their abusers are often adults as well. If the child doesn't feel comfortable enough to answer questions, it is difficult to gather evidence to be able to remove that child from their toxic environment.

The goal is to create a safe space for children to relax during an interview session and speak freely about their problems without the fear of retaliation. Young children often confide in pets or toys, knowing they will be free of judgment.

During an interview, Mibo does it’s best to give the child it’s full attention. It will nod to appear engaged in conversation, move it’s eyes down to look at the screen when a prompt appears, wiggle it’s antenna, and always turn to face the child (facial recognition).

MAKI - Therapy Tool Robot
The objective of this project is to design a social robot targeted towards children with low functioning autism that is easily accessible to researchers, educators or therapists. The goal is to develop an open-source robot where anyone would be able to 3D print it on their own and purchase relatively low-cost sensors to install.
The robot is capable of movement, touch response, speaking, and playing games via the screen.

Interactive Venom Sculpture
As you walk by the sculpture, the black goo will will appear to follow you. Motors are placed throughout the piece, which push and pull the black material when motion sensors are triggered. Additionally, touching the hand will push the material towards the viewer at that location, symbolizing a symbiotic relationship.

Floor Game
The light-up floor is powered by several Arduinos acting as slaves to a Raspberry Pi. The floor is initially off, resembling a dirty, mud floor until the player activates it. This was a more complicated project and required a few more engineers to collaborate. The premise of the game is to memorize a path to walk (which the game will first teach you). When you step on a square, it will either change colour to red, indicating that you’ve chosen the wrong square, or green, indicating the correct path. This was built using force-sensitive resistors and many, many neopixels.

I built a steampunk-inspired doorway as the main entrance to an escape room called “Crossroads”. The two pipes shown are filled with water which bubble by means of an air pump and hidden tubing. A neopixel and an Arduino were used to create a flickering, eerie light show. The neopixels in the tubes were protected from corrosion/shorting (due to the evaporating water) by creating an acrylic seal between the water and light so that the light may still shine through. I made similar entrances for a “Mayan” room, and “Prison” room as shown below.

The stone puzzle input shown below was an alternative, and more thematic way for players to input their puzzle solution (rather than buttons). When the room restarts, the eyes on the Mayan God’s face glow red, and a ball rolls out from his mouth (tongue stopping it from rolling onto the floor). When the player is ready to solve the room’s first puzzle, they may then take the ball and put it into the numbered holes. If an incorrect sequence was given, they receive negative feedback by means of a noise. If a correct sequence is given, positive feedback is given by a green light next to the number, and once completed, the Mayan God’s eyes glow purple, the room activates a purple light on the door, and the electromagnetically locked door swings open. The metal spikes surrounding the perimeter of the acrylic box (which contains 8 lanterns), are discrete touch capacitive buttons. When a player discovers that the spikes trigger an event, they realize the 6 lanterns become a light-flipping game. The game starts off easy: half of the lanterns are purple, and half are green. When you touch a spike, the corresponding lantern flips to the opposite color. You must match all 8 lantern colors to progress to the next level. Each level becomes more difficult, for instance, new colors may be introduced and touching a spike may trigger the corner lanterns to change color.
